You cut pattern pieces by area, but fabric is sold by the running length at a fixed width. Dividing the area you need by the usable width converts one into the other, and the waste allowance covers the reality that pieces never tessellate perfectly, prints run one way, and plaids have to match. The result is a realistic length to order rather than a bare theoretical minimum.
Treat the figure as a confident starting point. For an expensive fabric or a complex layout, confirm with a paper marker before you commit — but for everyday planning, area ÷ width plus a sensible margin gets you very close.

How do you calculate fabric yardage from an area?
Divide the total area you need by the usable width of the fabric to get a length, then add a waste allowance. For 6 m² of pieces on cloth with 1.5 m usable width, the base length is 6 ÷ 1.5 = 4 m; a 15% allowance makes it 4.6 m, or about 5 yards.
What is 'usable width' and why not just use the bolt width?
Usable width is the bolt width minus the selvedges and any edge you can't lay pattern pieces on. A bolt sold as 150 cm might only give 142–146 cm of usable cloth, and using the full figure would leave you short. When in doubt, measure the flat, pattern-able width.
How much waste allowance should I add?
It depends on the layout. Simple, non-directional pieces might need only 10%. Add more — 15–25% — for directional prints, napped fabrics like velvet or corduroy, plaids and stripes that must match, or lots of small curved pieces. Pre-washing shrinkage can eat into your margin too.
Why does the tool use area instead of laying out pattern pieces?
Area gives a fast, fabric-agnostic estimate that is close for efficient layouts. It is a planning figure, not a substitute for a real cutting marker: irregular shapes, one-way layouts, and matching can push the true requirement above the area estimate, which is exactly what the waste allowance is for.
How is the number of rolls worked out?
If you enter a roll length, the tool divides the required length (including waste) by that roll length and rounds up to the next whole roll, since you can't buy a partial bolt from stock. Forty-four metres needed against 25-metre rolls means two rolls.
